Yuma was designated a heritage area by Congress in 2001. There are only eighteen such areas in the country and Yuma is the first one west of the Mississippi River. The Ocean-to-Ocean Bridge project was the first of many individual heritage area projects planned for the 21-square-mile heritage area.
