The Chaldean/Babylonian system recognizes seven moving lights in placements among twenty-eight asterisms or "mansions"
(manázil, in the later Arabic), effectively incorporating eleven of our constallations in its thirty significant stars.
Two of the asterisms contain close stellar pairs of overlapping orb. Using small orbs for stellar conjunctions, a postulation of seventy sensitive degrees considered in divination with the conjunctions (and possibly oppositions) of these significant stars. If Fomalhaut is included as a twenty-ninth asterism, it makes seventy-two sensitive degrees, or exactly one-fith of the wheel of the Zodiac. Each degree indicated inclues all fractions of that degree listed, placing the star roughly in the center of its asterism. In calculating aspects between the seven "planets", allow wide orb, but with emphasis on planets strengthened by stellar conjunctions. Primary significance is given to the star on the ascendant or midheaven and related placements. Secondary consideration is placement of the moon, and then, of the sun and remaining planets. Instead of rulerships as applied to signs, the position of planets "in exaltation" appears to have been the significant association for the Chaldean astrologers. Consider house placements most powerful at the cusp of the house. The horizon points, medium coeli, and imum coeli are the most important and therefore mark the center points of their respective houses, the other eight centers found by trisecting the angles between the cardinal points, as practiced by Porphyry. The beginning point of the sidereal zodiac is taken as the star known to us as Eta Piscium (Alpherg, from the Arabic). This was clearly the first asterism of the Chaldeans. The tropical and sidereal zodiacs would have overlapped precisely on the new moon/vernal equinox of March 22, 79 C.E., (Julian Date 1749993), the date significantly taken as the inception point for the Saka Era, still used in India. Ptolemy confirms positions of Aldebaran as thirteen degrees Taurus and Regulus as three degrees Leo, closely matching the positions caclulated below for epoch 2000.0. Usually the proper motion of the stars is tiny in comparison with the precessional motion of one degree per 26162 days. Some Sidereal astrologers (Cyril Fagan et al) championed a synchronization of the two zodiacs around 221 C.E., because it placed Aldebaran and Antares on the midpoint of their signs, giving coordinates about two degrees greater for all the stars listed below. I believe Eta Piscium provides a better fit both astronomically and historically. For quick conversion of tropical zodiac coordinates to the sidereal ones in the table below, subtract 26 degrees for dates close to mid-1941 C.E. You would subtrace exactly 25 degrees from tropical for the year 1870, or 27 degrees for 2013. More exactly, the degrees to be subtracted are (year-79.22)/71.63. The approximate sun-conjunction dates provided below are for years close to 2000. Where a only a general reading has been provided for the star rising & culminating, you can adapt it somewhat to read for a planetary conjunction instead, by considering the characteristics of the planet and also those of the nearest house cusp. Many of the interpretations seem overly pessimistic or self-contradicting. There may be some implication to the effect that some types thrive on adversity while others strangle on the proverbial silver spoon! |
