Desert Lily Quilters Quilt Show 02, 03, 04, 05, 07
At The Yuma Civic Center

I learned about this show from a flyer posted on a wall. It promised 'over 200 beautiful quilts', and they made good on their promise. The show was well-attended, and it wasn't just gray haired grammas there. Well, for one, I was there, and I don't have gray hair YET!

One thing that impresses me about quilts, besides knowing a thing or two about sewing, and how much TIME must go into the making of them, is their often mandala-like appearance. If you know me, you know I'm into mandalas. Here is a detail of one from the 2003 show that also possesses a mandala symmetry.

There were so many beautiful quilts at this show, it's hard to single out the best. Certainly ranking in the top was a floral beauty. Its pink flowers were repeated over the white background.

Some of the color combinations used were really striking. The turquoise, gold and orange of my personal favorite contrasted richly with its black background.

Another truly remarkable quilt was the one designed to commemorate the Birding And Nature Festival Yuma will hold in 2002.

But my personal favorite of the SMALL QUILTS in the 2002 show was one featuring HUMMINGBIRDS. Yes, you guessed it, hummingbirds, well, purty birds in general, are another of my favorite things.

My favorite small quilt of the 2003 show also featured birds, this time in a brilliant scene evoking the mood of Acapulco.

The next time you hear of a quilter's show in your area, do be sure to go. The talent and beautiful creations will surprise you.

There were so many excellent quilts this year, but even though I have a new camera with much better capability, I still managed to get mostly fuzzy pictures. There was a lovely bed quilt featuring all the states of the country, each with its own state flower and bird, and although I tried several shots, they were all too blurry. But I did get good shots of these few:
