Poem to Bring About Beauty and Justice
June 11, 2007

The following poem was written while I was in Washington, D.C. I saw so many inspirational things there, the beautiful defense by Thomas Jefferson towards freedom and by Einstein towards truth. Their words were carved deep into monuments that might last, along with those in Egypt. But I also saw puzzling things. Some of the 'modern' artwork disturbed me. My reaction to those pieces was the exact opposite I normally have to art. But then I had an epiphany as to why so many pieces in my mind go against Ma'at, the beautiful justice. Perhaps what is at work here is that the artists are reflecting an inherent imbalance within our world today? The ecological disasters and societal disasters? However, it is time to not merely be a reflection, but instead we need to give models of something better..." Then at 12:30am EST on June 12th, (in my mind still the 11th), I was moved to write the following. (I had ideas that I would read it from the top of the Washington monument, but this didn't pan out.)

Oh ancient visions of beauty,
reaching high to the skies
that we might ascend!
Oh well inscribed words of power
declaring beauty and justice for all!
Beauty and justic for all,
may it be so!

Unmake those evils exercising their
deeds across the lands!
Undo stupidity and ignorance!
Create awareness!
May our cries of despair be turned into
cries of TRIUMPH!

May we create visions
of what CAN and SHOULD be!
May people become proud in their deeds!
May they envision and thus create
the POWER to change those
things that need changing!

From my sacred place of sending,
I send these images!
Hope to the downtrodden,
a growing strength in their limbs,
hearts growing confident:
We can make our world a better place!

As this comes into being, it will give
strength to the future -
starting here, starting NOW!

Revolving, evolving,
a world of change
Em hach, _sar_ en pi pi
ar ra _nakht_ lay -- now!
NOW!

(The image represents Ma'at's feather spiraling outwards. The 'foreign' words are 'words of power' that came to me. I know 'nahkt' means 'strength' in Egyptian.)
