As I read that sentence, forty years after its first uttering, I find very little has changed in those dreams and aspirations . But how do I define 'great things'? How do I define 'better place'?
Merriam-Webster gives the following definitions for the word 'great': 1 a : notably large in size : HUGE b : of a kind characterized by relative largeness -- used in plant and animal names c : ELABORATE, AMPLENumber three (remarkable in magnitude, degree, or effectiveness) and number nine (markedly superior in character or quality) seem to be what I was reaching towards. Also, I hope to become EMINENTand DISTINGUISHED as well. I hope to accomplish that by becoming number ten (both 'remarkably skilled' and marked by 'enthusiasm')
Refining the search further, distinguished means: 1 : marked by eminence, distinction , or excellence
And noble means: 1 a : possessing outstanding qualities : ILLUSTRIOUS b : FAMOUS, NOTABLEWith all of that research behind me, I hope to become a more effective person, producing works of superior character and quality, marked by enthusiasm and refinement. That I would like RECOGNITION for these efforts is a natural desire. But without the quality, I would not merit recognition. So now I have a refinement in the definition of 'greatness'. 'Making the world a better place' is probably going to be harder to define. I'll start with 'better':
1 : greater than halfOf these, ALL of them are applicable, except the first definition. The next step is to define how I would objectively go about increasing those ends in the world at large. How might each of my thoughts and actions go towards bringing about those ends? This is the goal which needs daily defining. How might I, for instance, bring about an improved mental attitude in others? I don't wish to say anything that would impair their self esteem. I wish always to address the possible divinity within each person so that its actualization can occur if the person has any receptivity towards it. (That, of course, depends on the individual person and where her Will is focused.) There are many ways to make 'the world' more 'attractive'. I can create works of beauty to share with others, and keep the environment around me as attractive as possible. To encourage 'improved performance', I can observe how my words and actions might encourage this from others. I need to learn the art of constructive criticism, rather than just an angry outburst at incompetance. I declare these all worthy goals for both my inner 'Xeper' and the 'Xeper' in the world at large. I think I have enough to keep me busy!
