If we only knew ... but maybe we do ...

On the table's left side, it is the dark and subconscious/intuitive side. On the right, it is the light and conscious/rational side. Through the conscious reasoning, we may discover mistakes, so the eraser is there. Also, by giving heed to the intuitive side, the direction of will being given with the conscious mind, we may sharpen our intuition, hence the pencil sharpener. Perhaps the apple is there to suggest we need to 'taste', ie 'experience' the mysteries. We can't just intellectualize them. Intuition is often given to the symbolism of the water element, so the sparkling water in the mug and the bottle lid from which the sparkling water came represent this as well.
