Venus, Aphrodite, renowned Goddess of Love, appears sometimes in gender mixed form, as in the beautiful statue of the Capitoline Hermaphrodite, featured on our main index page. Venus Castina was thus a special patroness of Romans drawn to cross the lines of gender. The mythos and celebration of Adonis closely parallels those of Attis, beloved of Cybele.
