Poems of Spirit and Earth

Part Five

Joan Ann Lansberry

A HOUSEWIFE IN PERTH

A housewife in Perth
writes poetry,
says her husband doesn't understand,
calls it sick.

Maybe he's like the detractor
who said of my writing
"Extreme" to copyright it,
no one would ever be tempted
to steal it.

Sleuthing his web site,
I learn
he's a good ol' boy,
likes women in bikinis who square dance
to down - home country tunes,
(...And who don't write poetry:
Those women think too much!)

EVEN IF

Beyond the window
Birds in tonal purity
Sing even if no one's listening.

CLENCHED FIST LEARNS NOTHING

I put my hand out to the door,
Flat out, open out:
Clenched fist learns nothing.

EACH SHALL RISE SILENT

Quiet, only the hum of the AC fills the night.
In the place where time is not,
I listen for inner voice.
The thousand things rising,
shall I tie a balloon to each one?
And then let go of each string?
In the darkness,
each shall rise silent into the moonlight,
then rising soundlessly into the stars,
take their place with the stardust.
I go find string

LAST CHERRY

Last cherry so sweet
I should have eaten slowly,
they are all gone now!
