There are two stories told about the creation of the Hanging Gardens of Babylon. One holds Nebuchadnezzar II (605-562 BC) built the gardens for his wife, Mede, to remind her of her mountainous homeland. More likely it was built by the Assyrian Queen Sammuramat (810-805 BC) during the period of their extensive development. Dikes, irrigation canals, other edifices, road systems, and other improvements were constructed in profusion by Sammuramat and designed by her staff of gallae throughout her empire and in every capacity.
