"Inhaling Deeply"
5:43am

Sometimes salvaging my picture efforts is quite the restoration act. The original of the following lotus inhaling lady originally looked like this:

And now she looks like this:

On the large, vertical block of relief, Niankhwadjet inhales the scent of a lotus.
Elements from the False Door in the Chapel of Mery's Mastaba
First half of Dynasty 4 (2575-2520 B.C.)
From Saqqara, Limestone

The information accompanying the relief says the scent of a lotus is associated with rebirth because the flower opens each morning for the sun. Bridget McDermott in Decoding Egyptian Hieroglyphs informs us further:

"The lotus had an important symbolic role in religious life. The blue lotus, which opens with the first rays of the sun, and the white lotus, which opens only at night, were associated with the sun and moon, and the opposing forces of light and dark...The lotus became a symbol of rebirth after death" and is "also linked to fertility and was a sexual symbol."

I especially like this picture as being a metaphor for inhaling deeply of life.

"A Good Weekend"
6:15am

The moodiness of Monday is upon me, abetted by Uranus square Moon. Most days I don't even look at the horoscope, just on certain days. I'll try to remember emotions follow thoughts, so I don't go off on a moody bender. And I did have a great weekend, so I will think instead about that.

I got everything I wanted to accomplish done. And I had time for entertainment, as well. I made Amazon richer still, and sent for music:

1 Jane Goodall's Wild Chimpanzees [SOUNDTRACK]
2 Cruel, Crazy, Beautiful World, Johnny Clegg
3 Essencia Do Brasil, Brazilean Guitar Quartet
4 Early Music (Lachrymae Antigua)

I really like the music that accompanied the IMAX film. Johnny Clegg was a major contributer to it, so I also ordered an album featuring just him. I like that I can now use the 'sample' feature to make sure I want to hear more. The Brazilean Guitar Quartet was discovered while looking for classical guitar albums. And Julia picked the Lachrymae Antigua. It's supposed to be ancient Greek music. She can take it to work if it's too horrible.

But she liked the sampler, so that's all that matters. We are all so different in our tastes, abilities, strengths and weaknesses. Julia and I balance each other out real well in those areas, enough alike where it's nice to be alike, and enough different, when the differences bring needed perspective.

We didn't go to the movie theater this weekend. Cinderella Man looks too 'macho' for Julia's taste, and Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants looks too much like a world neither she nor I can relate to, neither of us having a traditional teenage life. And the rest that are available to the small city of Yuma, either we've seen 'em, don't want to see 'em, or they are a definite wait until the DVD comes out.

So we went to Blockbuster. Evidence of just how long it's been since we were there awaited us at check out. A seven dollar fine from January surprised me. I do prefer the big screen experience if the movie is anything special. As it turns out, the three DVDs we rented could have been enhanced by the big screen experience. I had shied away from two of them because of negative critic review.

National Treasure was really quite an exciting adventure. Sacred Planet featured exquisite photography of remote regions and gave a peaceful feeling. Cat Woman was an absolute delight. Of course, they were plot holes. How come in a city of that size, policeman Tom is always the one to show up? But other than than, the movie is just plain fun, and fanciers of Bast will be well pleased. A mysterious woman with an Egyptian Mau cat tells the sexy, newly transformed Catwoman, "When you accept all parts of yourself, it gives you freedom and freedom is power." Ohh, I so grok that!

Yes, it was a good weekend, indeed.

"More Egyptian Treasures"
7:36pm

Here are three more Egyptian items from the Metropolitan Museum of Art:

Relief of Nebhepetre Mentuhotep, ca. 2040-2010 B.C.E.
reign of Nebhepetre Mentuhotep, Middle Kingdom
Upper Egypt, Western Thebes

Ma'at, Goddess of truth, balance and order
Faience architectural decoration from the palace of Amenhotep III at Malkata

All I remember of the details is that this is an unidentified God with a
WAS scepter

When I have all the photos regarding Egyptian artifacts assembled, I'll make a gallery for them all.
