"Set In The Desert"
12:26am

After seeing many wonderful images of SET, I am 'inspired again':

small version of the original 'Lord of the Desert' sketch

Okay, I'm not sure if Egyptian desert has sahuaros. American desert does, and I figure if Set's title is 'Lord of the Desert', then it includes ALL deserts. I hope to color this soon. As I've said before, an inspired Joan is a happy Joan. Grin!

"Set In The Desert II"
7:15am

This is the plan I have. I will do two colored versions, one with Set in the desert day light, facing away from the sun and one with Set in moonlight, facing the moon. Thereby, in both versions, he is shown to be a Dark God, and in moonlight version faces the moon as if to face his Mother Nuit, acknowledging her.

"New Gallery of Set Images"
7:15am

I've been meaning to do this for a while. Let this tiny icon take you there!

(Note from the future, May 21, 2006 to be exact.
I didn't have the domain name 'joanlansberry.com' back in February 2005, and yet you see you are being taken there. I'm going through on a refurbishing, thus the linkage update!)

"Must Listen Harder"
8:18pm

"Do I have spiders in my hair?" Julia woke me this afternoon, and I looked through her carefully arranged tresses. There were no spiders or web fragments. She worked hard trying to get one of our computers DSL ready, and being in dusty corners was part of the tasks. Sorry to say, we are not yet able to make use of this marvelous service for which we are paying. Julia did manage to get an ethernet card in the old computer and a special battery backup to protect against power surges. But the modem-which-is-not-technically-a-modem isn't working. The young, confused guy at Qwest said we have to buy a new one.

Pfft! Wouldn't it just figure that the free one the Qwest salesman gave us was no good. So our trials continue in these efforts. Well, really Julia's trials. I mostly just offer sympathic and encouraging words and check for spider invasions.

I am trying to give serious study to a new book. I had two from which to choose, and Serpent In The Sky won out. I will learn more about how ingenious the Ancient Egyptians were in the construction of the pyramids. That is if I don't fall asleep everytime I open its pages. I have trouble with the tiny print and it wearies my eyes. I did buy an off the rack pair of reading glasses, but they don't work so good, as my eyes aren't even. But, hey, at least I'm admitting I need the things.

Is the following poem good? I will need a few more days to decide.

I call to Deep Self
and Deep Self answers.
I call to Future Self
and Future Self answers,
though I must listen harder.
"What is that most excellent vision
of mySelf that I would become?"
I begin now to arrange my feathers
that I will wear with Pride.
I will dance,
I will spiral through time,
Future Self leads the way.
I call,
I hear an echo
Or did *I* echo?
All possible combinations
are in this hall of mirrors.
I reflect my Self.
I wear my feathers well.
I will spiral dance
through this hall of mirrors
in which time is and is not.

Whether or not the poem is good, I like the feeling the imagery and kinetic sensations it gives me.

"Come A Long Way"
3:27pm

What is that poor, abused book above? That is my workbook from science class in sixth grade, 1970. I was sure messy! The teacher mercifully graded it C+, fair. I've come a long way from those clumsy, messy, awkward days! And per the poem in yesterday's entry, I like to think of a future me looking at the me now, and thinking, "I've come a long way from those awkward days!" I let that be my guiding hope.

"Necessary Opposition"
9:51pm

I finished a sketch of Horus and Set battling, Set having the upper hand, done. I guess I didn't want to show the later bloodshed and shredded bits. But Horus sure looks worried. Set's not worried, he's confident. He would be.

John Anthony West quotes H. Frankfort:
"The embodiment of the two Gods (Seth and Horus) is another instance of the pecular dualism that expresses totality as an equilibrium of opposites."

That equilibrium doesn't come easy, however. However the dynamic tension that exists even at balance is necessary. West himself declares "A masterpiece of art, indeed creation of any sort, can take place only in the face of commensurate opposition. To the sculptor, the block of wood is his opposition in a very real sense - as every sculptor knows."(pg 36) Oh, yes, every poet and artist will tell you, the blank page is a b*tch at times.

Sometimes, we just have to sweat it out, despite our self-doubts.

10:28pm
A most interesting observation:

That in me which is like Horus worries alot, panics alot, "Ooh, I offended people, ooh, they won't like me. I don't think I can do this, etc.. etc." That in me which is like Set declares, "I'm gonna do my own thing and they can go scratch themselves. If I can't do this, well so what!"

Sometimes 'Horus' needs a good BAP!!
