![]() When the religion of the gallae, worshipping Cybele and Attis, was the state religion the Archigalla (equivalent to the Pope in Catholicism) wore a phrygian cap. As a goddess religion sexuality was accented as a normal and joyful part of human existence. The phyrgian cap, or mitre, represented the lingam, the head of the penis. When the Universal church, later to be called the Catholic church, was in the process of creating its mythos it stole openly and shamelessly from more ancient religions. It stole the story, the dates of events, built temples on ancient sites, stole the concept of pretty dresses and gaudy robes, and it stole the phrygian cap. It is doubtful the Catholic heirarchy had any idea of the meaning behind the cap, to them it represented the highest authority in the state religion and so they had to have one in their religion.
