Joan's commentary
That was Laura's description. I'd say the depiction has got a lot of subtlety going on. On a spontaneous lark, I drew this image, and the lady came out looking wary, as if she were listening for something, like the sounds of the kids coming home. She looks wary in this picture, too. The man is mellow, about to shut his eyes and go to sleep, but there's a vague look of concern on her face. I think of the Dr. Hook song, "When you're in love with a beautiful woman, it's hard." She's thinking, she's in love with a beautiful man, and "Everybody wants [him], everybody loves [him]
Everybody wants to take [her] baby home." Perhaps that's why the artist has her positioned possessively. She doesn't want to share him.
