The Temple of Artemis (Diana), also called the Artemision, at Ephesus in Ionia was famous from the time it was built in 560 BC. It was 180 feet by 377 feet and was roofless with a colonnaded interior housing, a relatively simple statue of Artemis. On the columns of the porch were inscriptions of the donations of King Croesus (560-546 BC)along side reliefs of mythical characters. The original burned in the rebellion of 356 BC and was rebuilt and decorated by Scopas and Apelles. It was destroyed a second time by the Goths in 263 AD.
