Gallae: Yesterday, Today, and Forever

Laura Darlene Lansberry
I n ancient times Gallae served society with great diligence and diversity. As with any ancient religion, many of their sacred rituals would seem strange to us today. Nevertheless, many of their services showed a humanitarian nature not evident in the populace at large. Deformed, sick, and unwanted children were abandoned in Rome; exposed, as it was called, left to die unless someone found the child and took it in. Gallae adopted such children and raised them. This is much as Hijras do today in India, except in India unwanted children are simply taken to the nearest community of Hijras.

Soldiers returning from war often felt brutalized and separated from their gods, the Gallae would perform sexual rites with them. Sex, it was not considered perverse, wicked or sinful, it was divine and sexual acts with Gallae, male or female priestesses, were considered a spiritual cleansing for the soldier, providing him a means of cleansing himself in order to reenter society.

Flagellation was sometimes a part of the Gallae rituals, a means of attaining an ecstatic state and preparing them for prophetic visions. On other occasions they would cut themselves offering their blood as sacred drink, or as sacrifice with which to bathe the images of their deities.

We of the Metro'on are not a religious movement, nor do we wish to recreate the religion of the ancient Gallae. We reclaim the truth that people with our nature, males living as women and females living as men, have existed since time began. In some societies we have been afforded a more integral role than in other societies, but we have always existed. In these pages we present convincing proof of our previous existence, proof we have been maligned and defamed, proof we were slaughtered in the millions, (largely by the minions of christianity), and proof an attempt has been made to erase our stories from history. Not that we were alone. Non-believers, pagan religions and many heretical christian sects received the same treatment. Jews were mocked and ridiculed and the voice of women was silenced.

Dredging up these stories is meant to embarrass christians; it is a means of restoring the diversity that has been siphoned from the world. The monotheistic patriarchal view of deity with its need for absolute control has proven inadequate. Every mythos serves a purpose for some people, giving them solace against a very large universe which is often difficult to comprehend, giving them meaning to an otherwise, for them, meaningless existence. The mythos of Jesus Christ serves some of the people, but there are many it doen't serve. Those who follow a different mythos, or none at all, must be accorded equal dignity and respect. Myth systems should be recognized for what they are ... comfort, solace, and superstition. They don't have and can never have an equal status with fact! They are not fact, nor knowledge, and they must never be allowed to oppose the development and understanding of history, medicine, science, or technology.

The Metro'on, today, isn't a religious movement, although we have a deep spirituality connecting us to other living things. We don't worship deities, however, we celebrate the joy of being alive. We speak of the Mystery of Life and of the many strange things we all experience, but we don't create answers that are not in evidence. Our rituals and practices, when we have any, are mythological plays, psychodramas exciting our creativity and expressing our love of life. They are not evidence of some fabricated realm beyond reality. Nor is our purpose to convert others to our convictions, merely to make elbow room at the table.
